The world’s oldest forest - Cairo, NY. ꂦ It’ The world’s oldest forest - Cairo, NY.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted. Winter hibernation coupled with pandemic isolation has wreaked havoc on my creative motivations and direction. What once inspired, now feels trivial in the scheme of things and I find myself gravitating away from those subjects and methodologies and towards new realms of more meaningful work and reevaluating processes and modes of creation. Starting over is daunting, especially when building a particular vision over a decade feels all for naught. But there is an excited energy there too - of exploration, experimentation and unknown destinations these new paths lead to. This past year I’ve found myself embroiled in fighting for indigenous land close to home - working with local environmental organizations and becoming close friends with indigenous leaders in my community. The work has been incredibly rewarding - but has also opened my eyes to how deep the roots of colonialism has run- and continue to run in this country. There is still much work to do - but these new knowledges are what guide me now - and have truly enlightened me to how badly we need to reconnect with our planet and people with new perspectives.
ꂦ
On that note - these images are from the world’s oldest known forest that was discovered just a few years ago about an hour from where I live in Cairo,NY. What you are looking at are the 385 million year old fossilized remains of Archaeopteris - the first trees known to sequester Co2 from the air helping to create the atmosphere on earth that we enjoy today. I ventured there this summer and had the whole old quarry where they were found to myself. To be present in this space, with these ancient ancestors was one of the most profound experiences and put so much into perspective.
ꂦ
I look forward to posting more here - sharing the places I discover and the work that comes from these experiences - both personal and collective. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Today I processed the Bone Black pigment I created Today I processed the Bone Black pigment I created from found Raccoon shoulder blades and some Turkey bones I saved from last Thanksgiving - that had been charred in last evenings fire. These materials, the lithic and elemental collaborators that reside within us, animals that we are, that allow us movement, migration, creation, structure have always spoken a language I have been captivated by.

Incorporating these agents in art and archive, working in tandem with mineral, botanical and lithic kin - with the aid of earth, fire, water and air - they combine to reveal old histories and mingle to tell new stories. They are good teachers as they lead the way to deepening connections with planet and cultures through the lens of their vibrant matter.

Bone black ... 10% Carbon, 84% Calcium phosphate, 6% Calcium carbonate. Bone black is denser than lamp black, and the least pure form of carbon black. It has a blueish hue and is an inorganic substance in this form. It mainly consists of hydroxyapatite - also known as bone mineral which is a naturally occurring form of calcium apatite. However, due to human intervention of charring the bones to create this pigment - it is then considered a synthetic substance - though it still contains organic substances that are not completely modified through the process of human intervention/extraction/collaboration.

The hunt for pigment yields a magnetic and vibrant The hunt for pigment yields a magnetic and vibrant pull. Lithic and Mineral agents act together as allies, wielding a strong and vital force - calling out in petric duet for curiosity, discovery and research - a provocation to cross-ontological fellowship.

These companions have things to say, many stories to tell if only we humans listened more humbly, passively, and respectfully. Theirs are the voices I hear, enticing me to wander landscapes formed by collaborative powers far greater and more complex than ourselves. Theirs are the voices that have called to others before me - to peoples who understood their knowledge and respected their agency - becoming collaborators through lithic modes of expression and survival, and later, through evolving greed and egoism - to those who cut off their intimate companionship with their nonhuman partners - pushing forward with destructive anthropocentric mentalities of taming their wild aesthetic through extractive industrial practices.

Deposits of ochre were usually found in association with deposits of kaolin, which is a pure-white type stone that when crushed found use in the pottery industry. Kaolin mined and processed in eastern Bennington was used by the Norton Pottery and the US Pottery, both of which operated along today’s Park Street (formerly Pottery Street), and as a Oiller for candy!
Also associated with ochre and kaolin deposits were thrust faults and natural springs. The faults generally ran north- south but some east-west and variants in between. These parallel-running geologic features are generally found along the western base of the Green Mountains. (Victor Rolando) ... more on this soon 🙂

Spent this past weekend getting a lot of sun and s Spent this past weekend getting a lot of sun and standing in solidarity with our Indigenous Nations. Saturday morning was spent peacefully walking with Jun Sun and members of the Grafton Peace Pagoda for Indigenous Solidarity from downtown Troy to Peebles Island where a beautiful ceremony was held on sacred land.

Sunday afternoon, I was honored and truly humbled to participate with the Three Sisters Sovereignty Project, along with many others from the Local community, stripping cedar poles for the construction of a longhouse they will be using for community outreach and education on their rematriated land. I look forward to returning this weekend to continue to lend a hand 🙂 Please be sure to check out their work and see how you can help this amazing local project - they post public calls for participation on their Instagram.

𝚂𝚎𝚕𝚏 𝙲𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝙶𝚒𝚟𝚎 𝚂𝚎𝚕𝚏 𝙲𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝙶𝚒𝚟𝚎𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚢 🍂 ... our world is thrust in turmoil, some places more than others - and self care is so important and often overlooked. Art, gentle words, earth & plants - all provide properties for healing, transformation and catharsis. My work with plants and earth to create pigments, transforming those natural treasures into workable forms for creating art is one of the greatest gifts I could imagine receiving - and the stories that arise from the places and the people I encounter through this project, are a medicine in their own right.
So ... to pass along little bits of my journey, and to share some of the bits and pieces that have brought me joy this summer thus far I am having a little giveaway to help provide a few things to incorporate into your own self care rituals, including : Radical Tenderness - a small chapbook of inspiring words, a 1oz. Bottle of Japanese Knotweed Ink - harvested from my home for your artmaking :), and a .50oz container of Plantain ( Broad and Narrow Leaf) and Jewelweed Salve - harvested near the streambed in my village and crafted with olive and coconut oils - perfect for those big bites and scratches that are part of being out in and enjoying nature.
